The Defensive Shotgun course is designed to build practical proficiency with the shotgun as a defensive platform. Students will work from solid fundamentals into faster, more demanding applications with an emphasis on weapon manipulation, ammunition management, accuracy, movement, and accountability.

The shotgun is an extremely capable platform, but it demands deliberate manipulation and constant ammunition management. This course focuses on keeping the gun loaded, keeping it running, and delivering accountable hits on demand.

COURSE TOPICS

  • Shotgun setup and defensive application

  • Patterning and understanding your individual shotgun/ammunition combination

  • Ready positions and presentation

  • Recoil management and efficient shot recovery

  • Loading techniques and ammunition management

  • Emergency and proactive loading

  • Select-load / ammunition changeover drills

  • Multiple-shot engagements

  • Target transitions

  • Positional shooting

  • Shooting and manipulating the shotgun while moving

  • Use of cover and unconventional positions

  • Malfunction identification and clearance

  • Decision-making and target accountability

  • Working the shotgun at realistic defensive distances

  • Increasing speed without sacrificing accuracy

AMMUNITION REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Round Count:

  • 200 rounds birdshot

  • 50 rounds 00 buckshot

  • 20 rounds defensive/quality buckshot

  • 10 rounds slugs

Total: 280 rounds

Students are encouraged to bring additional ammunition if they want to maximize repetitions during the course.

REQUIRED EQUIPMENT

  • Reliable defensive/pump or semi-automatic shotgun

  • Sling recommended

  • Eye and ear protection

  • Shotgun ammunition listed above

  • Method of carrying ammunition on the gun and/or body

  • Appropriate range clothing and footwear

  • Water/electrolytes

  • Chamber flag if required by the range

Come prepared to work. This is not a static shotgun familiarization class. The goal is to build a higher level of confidence and capability through practical application of the fundamentals at speed.
